Found this interesting cardboard box @ Walmart the other day for consumers to recycle their ink cartridges. Interesting for several reasons:
1. Allows the retailer (and the brand, in this case most likely HP) to control the conversation with consumers and connect at a deeper level (emotionally to save the planet)
2. The cardboard box allows store employees to simply put it / take it out in a way that is extremely easy… saves time & the planet. The former is important for retail execution, the latter for consumer engagement
3. Even if it has no effect, it’s a great messaging tool to communicate beyond product attributes… it tells consumers “We care, and you should too”
Winning at retail is all about creating small but memorable experiences that stand out in a world of overwhelming choices and sensory overload. Doing anything that ‘pops’ and creates a slight out-of-the-ordinary memory is critical in today’s over-crowded, over-informed world
